Apple Music has announced South African House DJ and producer DESIREE (Palesa Desiree Shilabje) as the latest cover star for its African electronic music hub, Isgubhu. Known for her genre-blending sound, DESIREE is thrilled to join an esteemed lineup. “African electronic music comes with many layers,” she shared. “This selection reflects the different sounds, past and present, that inspire me."
Hailing from Johannesburg’s Ivory Park, DESIREE’s passion for alternative sounds led her from early influences like Radiohead to the world of electronic music. She honed her DJ skills in Soweto and quickly rose to international fame, performing at iconic venues like DC-10, fabric, and Glastonbury. In 2023, she launched MMINO, an event series supporting Intersex South Africa, marking a significant step in her advocacy and entrepreneurship.
DESIREE’s latest EP, Intersexy, now streaming on Apple Music, delves into experimental electronic sounds and captures her unique perspective as an intersex artist. To celebrate her Isgubhu feature, she has curated an exclusive playlist showcasing the depth and diversity of African electronic music.
Isgubhu, launched in 2021, highlights African dance and electronic music on Apple Music, featuring playlists like Spotlight On and Isgubhu Voices, which celebrate both instrumental and vocal-driven tracks, elevating Africa’s dynamic influence on the global electronic scene.
