SAMAS RETURN BEST KWAITO ALBUM CATEGORY AND ADD TWO NEW CATEGORIES FOR THE AWARDS

Today the South Africa Music Awards have announced that they are spicing up the awards with three new categories. On their 27th year this year, the awards have returned the Best Kwaito Album category while adding Best Gqom and Best Amapiano categories to their list.

The prestigious music awards are also calling for entries as each category is said to be based on:

  • Best Amapiano Album - The category honours excellence by musicians in the amapiano genre.

  • Best Gqom Album - The category honours excellence by musicians in the gqom genre.

  • The Best Kwaito Album - The category has been reinstated after it was bundled together with amapiano and gqom genre as sub genres since 2017.

Commented RiSA CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi: "This move is a reflection of the changing local music landscape as seen in the rise in popularity of these three genres. The consistent number of entries and the competitiveness of the music justified the unbundling of the old Best Kwaito/Amapiano/Gqom Album category. The SAMAs remain relevant and responsive to the trends in the music industry. We look forward to a great run in the new categories. I also wish to encourage our musicians to submit entries for SAMA consideration before the deadline of midnight on 31 January 2021."

Entries for the awards have been opened since 26 November 2020 and are set to close at the end of this month, 31 January 2021.
